NBII International Activities and Initiatives

The NBII International Program participates in worldwide biological informatics activities that promote information sharing and infrastructure development across borders. Taking part in these activities helps us highlight and share information, standards, and tools developed through our national initiatives. NBII partners with governments and public sector organizations from many countries, as well as non-governmental, inter-governmental, and multinational organizations, academia, and private sector enterprises.

These initiatives are united by a common set of principles. All seek to make biodiversity data freely and easily available to a broad population of users around the world and promote a common set of standards to ensure that the retrieval and exchange of information can take place across political, linguistic, and institutional boundaries.  Finally, a fundamental requirement for participation in these international networks is that ownership of the data remains with its source.

GLOBAL INITIATIVES

The NBII participates in a wide range of global partnerships designed to support the exchange and use of biodiversity information across national and regional borders. Global initiatives operate on a worldwide level, helping integrate and utilize both national-level biodiversity information and regional networks. These initiatives provide the information required by countries to improve decision-making, particularly for issues at the interface of human development and biodiversity conservation. Many of these initiatives are also interoperable with the national and regional frameworks with which the NBII engages.

HEMISPHERIC & REGIONAL INITIATIVES

The NBII participates in a range of regional partnerships designed to integrate and exchange biodiversity and biological information across national and regional borders. These initiatives provide the information required by countries to improve decision-making, particularly for issues at the interface of human development and biodiversity conservation. Many of these initiatives are also interoperable with the national and global frameworks with which the NBII engages.

BILATERAL INITIATIVES

The NBII participates in bilateral partnerships with national governments designed to support the exchange and use of biodiversity information across national and regional borders.  Bilateral initiatives operate between government agencies, helping integrate and utilize national-level biodiversity information and providing the information required by countries to improve decision-making and enhance cross-border resource planning and cooperation. Many of these initiatives are also interoperable with the global and regional frameworks with which the NBII engages.

The NBII Program is administered by the Biological Informatics Office of the U.S. Geological Survey
