About Fisheries & Aquatic Resources

To aid conservation and restoration efforts, the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (FAR) node was established to provide an integrated, comprehensive web-based resource that will: 1) serve and access fishery and aquatic databases, 2) link to fishery and aquatic resource information sites and 3) act as larger scale coordinating site for fisheries and aquatic resources standards.

See the FAR Strategic Plan for more details.

FAR project development relies on partnerships with a variety of organizations, with two primary partners:

PSIEE Logo
The Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment (PSIEE) - The PSIEE is the central structure for environmental research, education, and outreach at Penn State. As the FAR technical lead, PSIEE staff provide: (1) expertise needed to create FAR mapping applications, (2) integrated database development and search interfaces, and (3) servers to host FAR data and applications.

Big Sky Institute
The Big Sky Institute (BSI) at Montana State University is an interdisciplinary center dedicated to creating, applying, and communicating science-based knowledge. The BSI Ecological Informatics Lab brings together natural sciences, geographic information systems (GIS), statistics, modeling, information technology, and computational programming with a comprehensive goal of making ecological data more available to society. As the FAR content lead, BSI provides (1) guidance in the direction of FAR development and structure, and (2) identification of data and informational resources.

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Node Partners

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Marine Resources is providing metadata and data to the SEAMAP project.
Partner Type:  State Government (U.S.) Partners

The American Fisheries Society is working with FAR on the development of the Multi-State Aquatic Resources Information System (MARIS).
Partner Type:  Non-profit Organization Partners

The American Fisheries Society Computer User Section is working with FAR on development of the Delaware River Mapping Application, FAR node strategic planning and a pilot assessment of American Eels.
Partner Type:  Non-profit Organization Partners

The American Sport-Fishing Association is working as a partner in support of the Eastern Brook Trout Initiative and the National Fish Habitat Initiative.
Partner Type:  Non-profit Organization Partners

AFWA represents states'' interests in fish and wildlife management issues. The NBII and AFWA have formed a cooperative agreement to work towards increased access to state conservation data through the NBII. AFWA represents all of the fish and wildlife agencies in the United States (and the non-states of D.C., Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam). The FAR node is working collaboratively with AFWA on the Eastern Brook Trout Project, and to support the data needs under the National Fish Habitat Initiative. AFWA also provides state and other wildlife professionals perspectives for the development of the Chronic Wasting Disease Data Clearinghouse.
Partner Type:  Non-profit Organization Partners

The Atlantic Coastal Cooperative Statistics Program participates as a member of the FAR guidance team.
Partner Type:  State Government (U.S.) Partners

The Colorado Division of Wildlife is working with FAR on the Upper Colorado River Cutthroat Trout Project.
Partner Type:  State Government (U.S.) Partners

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection has provided data to the Eastern Brook Trout Initiative.
Partner Type:  State Government (U.S.) Partners

EBTJV consists of private and public partnerships working on regional and range-wide threats to the eastern brook trout by developing long-term goals for comprehensive restoration and education. The Southern Appalachian Information Node (SAIN) and the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (FAR) node are working collaboratively with this group to share information.
Partner Type:  Inter-agency Initiative (U.S.) Partners

FishBase is working with the FAR node and Inter-American Biodiverity Information Network (IABIN) to create the FishBase of the America's project.
Partner Type:  Global International Initiative Partners
