The NBII produces a variety of white papers, alone and in collaboration with other informatics initiatives. Additionally, the NBII hosts or co-hosts various workshops each year, focused on biodiversity informatics, data integration, taxonomy, geospatial capabilities, and other critical issues.

CollaspeEco-informatics for Decision Makers: Advancing a Research Agenda (Biodiversity and Ecosystem Informatics 3rd Workshop Report)
Description: This report from a National Science Foundation/National Biological Information Infrastructure-supported workshop focuses on the informatics tools needed to support environmental and ecological decision makers. Workshop participants approached the problems in an interdisciplinary manner, articulated research issues, critiqued those issues, and prioritized strategies for sustaining research. Case studies from the May 2004 NSF Digital Government conference were used as models for identifying research issues, which were categorized into one of four major areas: modeling and simulation, data quality, data integration and ontologies, and social and human aspects.

Description: From the forward: "Ecological forecasts predict the effects of biological, chemical, physical, and human-induced changes on ecosystems and their components. These forecasts do not guarantee what is to come; instead, they offer scientifically sound estimations of what is likely to occur....Forecasting the impacts of catastrophic events, like wildfire, drought, and flood, helps protect ecosystems, especially those at risk, so we can ensure long-term delivery of goods and services, decrease short-term negative impacts, and minimize harm to people and the economy."

CollaspeFirst NBII Biodiversity Modeling Workshop: Results and Recommendations
Description: From the introduction: "This workshop is the first of several planned by the NBII to investigate the range of possibilities in biodiversity modeling thought, practice, and collaboration. This first workshop was intended to lay the groundwork and we feel that mission was accomplished. It lays out a very broad vision, one that will require considerable advancement in both biodiversity modeling and informatics before it can be fully realized. Specifically this workshop seeks to address two NBII objectives: Developing a suitable framework to support knowledge discovery and creation for the nation’s biological and ecological resources; and Leading the development, selection, and distribution of tools and standards necessary to facilitate interoperability and allow meaningful interactions with scientific data and information."

CollaspeMetadiversity II: Assessing the Information Requirements of the Biodiversity Community - Summary of Findings
Description: From the Introduction: "MetaDiversity II was a symposium jointly organized and sponsored by the National Federation of Abstracting & Information Services and the U.S. Geological Survey. It was held June 25-26, 2001, in Charleston, SC. A pevious meeting, MetaDiversity, had been held in Natural Bridge, VA, in November, 1998....Specifically, MetaDiversity II was organized to identify: places biodiversity information user needs are being met and how they are being met; gaps in biodiversity information needed to support users; [and] populations of priority users of biodiversity information." The report summarizes these findings.

CollaspeMetadiversity III: Global Access for Biodiversity Through Intergrated Systems
Description: From the Introduction: “MetaDiversity III was the third in a series of symposia jointly sponsored by the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) of the U.S. Geological Survey and NFAIS. The goal of these…interactive workshops was to identify, discuss, and resolve challenges facing the biodiversity research community in their efforts to create a global information resource….The discussions that took place during the MetaDiversity III workshop centered around two aspects critical to the success of a global information resource. One working group focused on the creation and acceptance of international standards, a key element of ensuring interoperability between systems created in disparate settings….The other working group focused on the need for incentives that would encourage the sharing and depositing of data across institutional and international boundaries.� Findings and recommendations from these groups are detailed in this report.
